Facebook: Is the era of Facebook over? Why did Mark Zuckerberg say that the craze is coming to an end?

You must have noticed that Facebook is no longer getting the same reach as before, that is, there is no engagement like before. Earlier, there used to be a lot of comments and likes on a post on Facebook, but not now. If you also believe that the craze of Facebook is now ending, then you are not alone in thinking so. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself has admitted that Facebook's influence on culture is now continuously decreasing.

This was revealed when the email conversation between Zuckerberg and Facebook head Tom Ellison in April 2022 was presented in court during the ongoing antitrust case on Meta by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In these emails, Zuckerberg admitted that even though the number of users and engagement on Facebook is still stable, its cultural influence is declining.

Changing user behavior
Facebook's attractiveness was initially based on the "friending model", that is, people made mutual friends, but now Zuckerberg himself believes that today's users, even he, now prefer to follow influencers on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. This changing thinking has made Facebook's friend-based system outdated and less attractive.

Zuckerberg's "crazy idea"
Zuckerberg gave several suggestions to improve this situation, one of which he himself called a "crazy idea". He wondered what if all the friend lists of Facebook users were reset and people created their networks afresh? He also said that Facebook's focus on building community through groups is important, but also expressed doubt on how much more improvement can be made in this direction.

FTC vs. Meta-Antitrust Case
The matter is not only about Facebook's falling popularity. The FTC also alleges that Meta has eliminated competition in social media and maintained its dominance by purchasing Instagram and WhatsApp. If the FTC wins this case, Meta may also be ordered to sell Instagram and WhatsApp, which could prove to be a major change in the technology industry.
