Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that strange people or dubious people have started flocking to the state adding that the government will not tolerate fundamentalist activities or politics on sensitive issues.
Talking to media persons on Monday in Guwahati he said, “This sudden influx of visitors is from Mumbai and Kerala and the government will arrest them if they cross the limit.”
He added, “We are tracking their movement. They were also present during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update and disrupted the process. Earlier, the government paid little attention, but now we are monitoring each visitor, and anyone violating the rules will face arrest,” he said.
Assam was the first state in the country where NRC exercise was rolled out, NRC is a supreme Court monitored exercise aimed at weeding out illegal immigrants.
The supplementary NRC list, published on August 31, 2019, had found more than 31.1 million people eligible to be included in the registry while leaving out over 1.9 million people.
He said during the NRC exercise it was falsely shown that a missing father or maternal uncle was meeting their family. “Similar names were picked, and a person was affixed to it. False kins were generated for existing residents due to the influence of certain individuals, including social activist Harsh Mander”.
He added, “We have found out these anomalies in the last five years and will submit them to the Supreme Court".
Sarma also informed that a team from the BBC had visited Uriamghat, the area which recently witnessed an eviction drive. “We did not allow them to enter the forest area. We had made it absolutely clear that to enter the forest, one would need prior permission. We are taking actions bravely this time, and we will not allow any individual or group to take advantage of these issues.”
Without naming the Assam Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma alleged that his Farm2Food NGO was funded by Hungarian American investor George Soros and stated that the initial funding for the University of Science of Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) also needs to be examined.
Sarma said, “ AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and Jamaat-Ulema-i-Hind leader Mehmood Madani promised to build homes for those affected during the Kokrajhar violence in 2013-14, but they did not do so with their own money but with funding from outside".
