In a shocking incident during Dashami celebrations in the Bamunimaidam area of Guwahati, a 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths. As per a TOI report, the attack reportedly took place near the Kalibari Jagriti Sangha Durga Puja pandal on Thursday night after the victim requested that a song by the late singer Zubeen Garg be played.
Victim Identified as Abhinash Rajak
Chandmari police have identified the deceased as Abhinash Rajak, a resident of the Bamunimaidam railway colony. The victim’s sister, Sarita Rajak, filed a complaint on Friday, prompting authorities to launch a formal investigation into the brutal attack.
Police Detain Committee Members, Hunt for Main Accused
Junmoni Kalita, Officer-in-Charge of Chandmari police station, confirmed, “We have registered a case and are actively investigating the matter. Six members of the Durga Puja committee have been detained and are being interrogated.”
Police are still searching for the accused individuals named M Shankar Kumar Rao, Ratul Borah, and Sujit Sarkar, who reportedly remain at large.
Attack Allegedly Triggered by Musical Request
According to Sarita Rajak, the assault occurred between 10:30 pm and 11:00 pm, shortly after the idol immersion ritual. “Abhinash requested the youths to play a song by the late Zubeen Garg, which apparently angered them. A group of around 30 to 40 individuals attacked him, even as he pleaded for forgiveness,” she recounted.
She added that Abhinash initially tried to escape in an e-rickshaw but was dragged out and assaulted again, eventually being left near the Anil Borah Club in the colony area. He was later found by a local resident who informed the family.
Abhinash was rushed to a private hospital in the Geetanagar area, where he was declared dead. His body has since been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the city, raising concerns about safety during public festivities and the need for stricter measures to prevent such acts of violence. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could help in locating the remaining suspects.
