R Madhavan, known for his calm demeanour and versatile performances, has never been one to flaunt wealth or luxury. Yet, when it comes to his most expensive purchase, the actor made a choice that reflects both his love for adventure and his pursuit of peace. In various interviews, Madhavan revealed that his biggest splurge wasn’t a mansion, diamond, or luxury car—but a yacht.
Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia on The Ranveer Show (TRS), Madhavan said he bought the yacht during the COVID-19 lockdown after deciding to earn a captain’s license. “I bought it because I always wanted to take a captain’s license and during COVID I had nothing better to do, so I sat at home and gave my exam. It took me 6 months. So now I’m a licensed captain who can sail a 40-foot yacht or a boat,” he shared.
The actor described how the yacht became his personal retreat and a creative sanctuary. “Just to scratch that and take it off my bucket list, I bought a yacht and I enjoy it thoroughly… it’s a beautiful place for me. I can take it out to the sea and I park overnight, and I look at the dolphins fly around as I write my stories,” he said. Docked in Dubai, the vessel isn’t merely a display of success—it’s a space where Madhavan reconnects with himself.
In another conversation with Curly Tales, Madhavan admitted that the purchase was his biggest financial indulgence after his home, but one he holds no regrets about. “It is the best purchase of my life,” he remarked, adding that the experience brings him closer to peace. He also called it “one step closer to nirvana.”
A passion, not a show of wealth
While yachts are often viewed as luxury symbols, Madhavan emphasized that his motivation wasn’t about opulence but about fulfilling a dream. He often takes the yacht out alone, thanks to his captain’s license, but the joy multiplies when his friends and wife, Sarita, use it. “It gives me maximum pleasure when all my friends come and they treat it as their own… and Sarita taking her friends out and doing it. It has given us a lot of pleasure,” he shared.
Madhavan has long maintained a middle-class sensibility despite his success. “I won’t go and have a 3 lakh bottle of wine for sure or spend 6 lakhs on a dinner… My middle-class tendency doesn’t allow it,” he said during the same chat with Allahbadia.
Choosing joy over extravagance
The actor has been vocal about the financial realities of being an Indian film actor. He once explained that Bollywood lacks the royalty systems seen in Hollywood, meaning actors rarely earn from older films. Madhavan mentioned that if royalties existed, movies like 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, or Tanu Weds Manu would have secured his family’s financial future.
