A sessions court recently granted bail to a 27-year-old man arrested in February for abetting suicide of his rumoured girlfriend, noting that that the deceased had attended the accused's haldi and wedding ceremonies.
As per the case, the woman met the Vikhroli resident during lockdown when he had gone to her house to install Wi-Fi in 2018. According to her parents, in January 2025, their daughter informed them that the accused, with whom she was in love with, was getting married to someone else. This disturbed her and she ended her life on January 30, the family said.
The defence lawyer, however, said that despite knowing that their daughter was in love with the accused, they did not bother to approach the latter's family for a marriage proposal. Besides, the defence referred to her WhatsApp conversation and claimed that she was in relationship with other men too; which proves that the man was falsely implicated, the lawyer added. It was also pointed out that days before ending her life, the woman attended the accused's 'haldi' and marriage ceremony on January 17 and 19.
The prosecution argued that the WhatsApp conversation also shows that the deceased was disturbed due to the marriage. She further submitted that if granted bail, there is possibility that the accused might tamper with the evidence and pressurise the complainant.
The court noted that the woman attended the wedding functions without raising any objection. Further incarceration of the accused is not required as it would not serve any purpose, it ruled.
