All Creatures Great and Small series 6 broadcasts on Channel 5 shortly and witnesses the comeback of Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon and Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot.

The James Herriot star spoke exclusively to Reach publications regarding the filming process for the fresh episodes, and he revealed details about a particularly demanding episode.

The performer explained: "This year we did have some escaping sheep. It was towards the end of the day for episode one and we were doing a big wide shot of everything, so they very much needed to be in it, with this dog rounding up the sheep.

"They just bolted and one gate wasn't shut and they were just gone, like way down, the handlers were running down after them.

"They were like 'do we have time? We might get one more [take] in', and they radioed back from the next village like 'no'."

He wasn't the only one to encounter a difficult time with an animal co-star this series, as Callum Woodhouse also revealed a chaotic experience.

Whilst on break from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Tristan intends to discover methods to occupy himself at Skeldale.

He disclosed: "I had a few scenes this year with a parrot which was an absolute nightmare to film because it was just very noisy.

"And really weirdly, almost knowingly chooses to make all of its crazy sounds just as you start speaking.", reports the Manchester Evening News.

"You open your mouth to speak and he starts making all these crazy noises, it's like 'you know what you are doing'.

"So all of those scenes were essentially shot twice, one with the parrot and one without."

The first episode of the new series is set in May 1945, and with victory in Europe announced, there's a glimmer of peace on the horizon.

However, for James, tranquillity is elusive as he grapples with family life and an exceptionally demanding Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West).

Channel 5 heralded the return of the series, stating: "We watch as our characters re-connect with each other and find their renewed purpose, looking to a brighter future as the world around them starts to breathe again."

All Creatures Great and Small season 6 airs on Channel 5 on September 25 at 9pm
