Millions of British travellers booking cheap flights to are being warned about a common airport mistake that could turn a short into a logistical nightmare. According to airport transfer experts at SCS Chauffeurs, many budget airlines advertise flights to major cities, but land passengers at airports that are actually dozens or even hundreds of miles away from their intended destination.

Hadleigh Diamond, director of , cautions that "many budget airlines use major destinations in airport names that are actually 100s of miles away from the real location, leaving travellers scrambling to arrange an airport transfer." For those planning a quick getaway or a weekend break, unknowingly landing at one of these airports could mean unexpected transport costs, long delays, and even an overnight stay.

Here are airports to avoid if you're looking for a quick day trip:

  • Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) - 126 km (78 miles) from Frankfurt (closer to Luxembourg)
  • Oslo-Torp Airport (TRF) - 110 km (68 miles) from Oslo
  • Memmingen Airport (FMM) (marketed as Munich West) - 116 km (72 miles) from Munich
  • Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) - 100 km (62 miles) from Stockholm
  • Barcelona-Reus Airport (REU) - 100 km (62 miles) from Barcelona
  • Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA) - 85 km (53 miles) from Paris
  • Düsseldorf-Weeze Airport (NRN) - 80 km (50 miles) from Düsseldorf

Transfers from these airports can take up to two hours and cost between £12-£21 per person, adding unexpected time and expense to a supposedly low-cost trip.

SCS Chauffeurs explained that airports can use a major city's name if they serve its broader metropolitan area, even if they are significantly outside the city itself. While this is technically allowed, many travellers feel misled when they realize their "Paris" flight actually lands over an hour away.

Hadleigh advises travellers to double-check airport codes before booking flights and research airport transfer times in advance. "These airports do offer cheaper flights," he admits, "but only if you plan your transfers properly, especially if you're arriving late at night."

For those looking to save money without the stress, pre-booking an airport transfer can help avoid last-minute surprises and ensure a smooth journey to the actual destination.
