Foreign office issues Greece travel update

has issued an update to travellers following a 6.1 magnitude this morning. The quake, led to Tsunami warnings by authorities, after the huge tremor rocked the popular holiday island in the early hours.

It comes just a week after a similar sized earthquake struck the island which left buildings damaged and forced some people to sleep outside over fears for their safety.

has since taken the step to warn tourists visiting the island that Greece "can experience extreme natural phenomena" as they advised travellers to familiarise themselves with safety procedures and best practise.

Their alert reads: "Greece can experience extreme natural phenomena such as earthquakes, wildfires, extreme heat and flash floods."

"The area around the Cycladic islands of Santorini (Thira), Anafi, Ios and Amorgos, experienced increased earthquake activity in early 2025.

They added: "There is a risk of earthquakes and earth tremors in Greece.

"You should familiarise yourself with safety procedures in the event of an earthquake, follow advice given by the local authorities and call the Greek emergency services on 112 if you are in immediate danger."

"This increase has since subsided and the tourist season is expected to continue as usual."

Tourists have taken to social media to tell of the fear they experienced as they were woken up by the natural disaster.

Charlotte Lilley described her experience on TikTok.

She said: "I've just been woken up by a f***ing earthquake. I am absolutely petrified," she said at the start of her video.

"I was literally asleep. Woke up to the view shaking. I thought the TV was going to fall off." She then said that her partner Jack and their son Rico were still asleep inside their room.

"Oh my god, I'm so f***ing scared," she said. She then added: "And now I'm s***ing myself because they say that after an earthquake, it's like a tsunami warning. So I'm just looking at the sea now, thinking 'does that look any different?"
