Hydrangeas are a staple flower in many homes and gardens, they're a colourful bloom which is sure to add life to your space.
Keeping them blue can be hard but if you notice the colour is becoming dull on your plant, there's a few things you can do to ensure your hydrangeas will continue standing out in your garden.
One important tip is to avoid harsh water. Water from your hose can be rather alkaline, reports Martha Stewart.
Instead, you should collect rain water, which is more acidic, to water your blue hydrangeas.
But this is not the only way to keep your blooms bright.
Firstly, if you're thinking about buying some hydrangeas for your garden, it's important to make sure you choose the right ones.
For example, you could purchase the Nikko Blue hydrangea which is a popular Japanese variety.
Or, you could try the Endless Summer variety which is known to produce bright blue blooms with the correct soil acidity on both old and new wood.
Other than this, the flowers need four to six hours of morning to early afternoon sun.
When you're planting them, you should make sure to provide an area where they get a good amount of sunlight.
You should also make sure to prune the flowers shortly after blooming to maintain the shape of your plant.
BBC Gardener's World adds that it is important to mulch your hydrangeas every year in spring with leaf mould, well-rotted manure or compost.
Otherwise, it's usually best to avoid feeding them, as this encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
If you're wondering how much to water them, watering regularly is recommended, even weekly if necessary throughout the plant's first growing season to help the roots establish.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure your flowers will be bright and blue, adding colour to your garden.
