Lloyds, Halifax, NatWest and the Bank of Scotland are set to shut a total of 113 branches in 2025, the first of which starts tomorrow. Lloyds is gearing up to close a branch in Leeds Crossgates on Wednesday, August 20, quickly followed by the closure of its Hornchurch Station Lane branch on September 11.
The banking giant has already closed at least 18 branches this year, with 16 leaving the high street forever in June and two closing in July. However, the major lender is expected to close a further 23 before the year's end. It is estimated that Lloyds Banking Group will close nearly 300 locations in 2025 and 2026.
The mass exodus of banks from the high street has been attributed to changing customer behaviour, with many Brits preferring to bank online, leading to cost-cutting measures.
Halifax, part of the Lloyds group, is cutting back its high street presence. A total of 23 branches are set to close before the end of the year, and Northwich and Skegness are next, with their last date penciled for September 3.
The Bank of Scotland, which is also part of the Lloyds Banking Group, will close four branches in October and November. Its Edinburgh Corstorphine store is set to have its last day on October 29, quickly followed by Pitlochry the following day.
NatWest has earmarked 46 branches for closure, while eight have been earmarked for closure without dates. A branch in Cwmbran, Wales, and Wisbech, England, will close on September 1.
Customers who do not have access to online banking, or simply prefer to bank in person, can do so at their nearest Post Office.
You can perform basic banking tasks at any one of the 11,684 branches, but opening new bank accounts, taking out loans or mortgages will have to be done online or at another branch.
Some banks offer a mobile banking service, either by bringing a bus to your local area or by using buildings like village halls or libraries to offer support that would have been available in a branch.
