Meghan Markle was blasted for breaking Queen Elizabeth's final wish after all the efforts she went through to help her when she first married into the Royal Family. The Duchess of Sussex became a working royal in 2018 when she married Prince Harry.
But her royal tenure did not last long as the Sussex couple stepped down as senior working royals in 2020 and moved to the US. Following various discussions with the royals after their bombshell announcement in January 2020, Harry and Meghan officially quit the Royal Family in March of that year. In a statement on January 18, 2020, Buckingham Palace made it clear that the Sussexes were not to use their HRH titles.
The statement read: "As agreed in this new arrangement, they [Harry and Meghan] understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties.
"With The Queen's blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.
"The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family."
But the Sussexes' titles came back into the spotlight this year after one of Meghan's friends showed a picture of a gift basket with a card from "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex" during a podcast interview with her.
Aides quickly rushed to clarify it was a private gift and that, while the Sussexes still retain their royal titles, they do not use them commercially.
Meanwhile, Meghan has been establishing herself in various business ventures this year as Meghan Sussex or Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
Now a former royal aide has criticised the Duchess for doing what the late Queen asked her not to do - have commercial gain linked to their royal ties.
Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's former butler, said on behalf of Casino Org: "The Queen did bend over backwards to accommodate them.
"But the last thing she said to them was, 'Please don't use your titles for commercial gain'.
"Now, that must rattle around in Harry's head now that their merchandising empire is being launched in the United States, and it's something which our late Queen didn't want them to do - use their public title for personal gain."
He added: "So, it's up to Harry now to think, what does his conscience tell him? Does it tell him that he's gone against his grandmother's wishes?"
"Did he really upset her towards the end of her life? Yes, he did. Harry, yes, you did. You upset your grandmother. You should have had more respect and loyalty for your Queen and your grandmother."
