NEW DELHI: Describing the Yamuna as “not just a river but a symbol of faith”, home minister Amit Shah on Thursday asked all stakeholders to adopt a holistic approach towards cleaning the Yamuna river, ensuring adequate drinking water supply and improving the sewage system in Delhi.

At a meeting here — attended by housing and urban affairs minister Manohal Lal, Union jal shakti minister C R Patil, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, and senior officials of Central and Delhi govts — Shah reiterated that cleanliness of the Yamuna is a priority of Narendra Modi govt. He suggested that all plans for cleaning the river and fixing problems relating to drinking water and drainage in Delhi, incorporate a 20-year vision.

Shah suggested that the jal shakti ministry should develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for all sewage treatment plants (STPs), setting standards for their quality, maintenance, and discharge. This SOP may be shared with other states, he said.

Underlining the crucial role of Delhi Jal Board in cleaning the Yamuna, the home minister said it needs to be strengthened by filling up the vacant posts within the body.

Shah said enhancing Delhi’s water distribution efficiency and effective water management are key to ensuring drinking water supply across the city. He asked DJB to plug leakages in the pipelines and use world-class technology for desilting of drains.

Cleaning the Yamuna was among the top promises made in the BJP manifesto for Delhi election held earlier this year. In its Sankalp patra, BJP had claimed that the erstwhile AAP govt had failed to deliver on its ‘clean Yamuna’ promise, despite having spent Rs 8,500 crore; it had promised to not only clean the Yamuna but also build a riverfront.

The BJP had faulted the Arvind Kejriwal regime for distributing polluted water to Delhi residents, even as the tanker mafia grew. Also referring to the death of 3 UPSC aspirants due to flooding of their basement coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar during last monsoon, BJP promised that it would engage in flood forecasting using real-time data “to predict urban flooding, enabling timely action for the safety of citizens”.
