CBSE tightens school safety norms; makes CCTV cameras mandatory in classrooms, corridors, playgrounds: New safety rule explained

NEW DELHI: In a significant move aimed at enhancing student safety, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has amended its by-laws, making it mandatory for all affiliated schools to install high-resolution CCTV cameras with real-time audio-visual recording .

According to the new regulation, schools must place cameras at all key locations, including:

• Entry and exit points
• Lobbies and corridors
• Staircases
• Classrooms
• Laboratories
• Library
• Canteen area
• Store rooms
• Playgrounds
• Other common areas

Toilets and washrooms are exempt from this rule, respecting privacy concerns.

CBSE has specified that these cameras must be capable of both audio and video recording, enabling real-time monitoring of school premises.

The board said that this step is essential for ensuring the safety of students and staff and strengthening surveillance infrastructure.
