Monsoon Forecast: IMD Issues Heatwave Alert and Heavy Rain Warning for Multiple Indian States

New Delhi, April 7, 2025 As India enters the peak of summer, the first week of April has brought intense heat across many regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave alerts for several states, while also warning of heavy rainfall in parts of South and Northeast India over the next few days.

Rising Temperatures Trigger Heatwave Alerts

The IMD reports that Northwest India, Central India, and Maharashtra will continue to see rising temperatures over the next 4 days, with the mercury likely to climb by 2 to 4°C. Gujarat, particularly Saurashtra and Kutch, is expected to face hot winds and severe heat until April 10.

The heatwave conditions are particularly intense in:

• Delhi-NCR

• Rajasthan

• Gujarat

• Maharashtra

• South Peninsular Plateau

A yellow alert has been issued in various districts to warn residents of the extreme heat. The IMD expects temperatures to ease slightly by the end of the week, with a potential 2-3°C drop in some areas.

Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Southern and Northeastern States

While North and Central India grapple with heat, rainfall is forecasted in parts of the South and Northeast:

• Kerala and Mahe: Heavy rainfall expected today, April 7.

• Karnataka: Light to moderate rain predicted until April 8.

• Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on April 7.

• East and Northeast India: Rain likely from April 10 onwards.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad are also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on April 9 and 10.

Hailstorm and Lightning Threats in Eastern India

The IMD has also forecast hailstorms in parts of Bihar on April 9. Residents are advised to remain indoors during extreme weather events and avoid sheltering under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms.

Given the dual threat of heatwaves and thunderstorms, the IMD urges citizens to:

• Stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours.

• Use protective clothing and sunscreen if stepping outside.
